Today is the 10th anniversary of the passing of the 2015 Gender Recognition Act. It was going to require medical sign-off as in UK. But with 6 weeks to go a bait and switch happened and it became "self-id".

"Doctors need to be removed from the picture, as their involvement suggests that gender is a matter of biology." said Michael O'Flaherty, former rapporteur of the original non-binding Yogyakarta Principles, now Commissioner for Human Rights at the Council of Europe.

A decision as momentous as allowing "self-id" for men when there was no impact assessment carried out on the effect of this for women appears to have been made by the then Cabinet:

The UK issued 9,633 Gender Recognition Certificates between 2005-06 & March 2024 for a population of 68,265,209
= 0.014% in circa 19 years
Ireland had 5,149,139 in the 2022 Census and issued 1,544 GRCs from 2015 to end 2023
= 0.03% in 8 years

Women did not consent to allowing men to "self-id" as women, a safeguarding risk to women and children.
We now have
- men in women's prisons
- men and boys in women's and girls sports
- men trying to access women's spaces
- children misled in schools about "gender identity"
An 84% male Dáil passed this dangerous and unnecessary Act in 2015 at the behest of activists.
No one can change sex, even with hormones and/or surgery.
Legislators need to #RepealTheGRA as a matter of urgency to protect the rights and needs of women and children.
