Yesterday it was revealed in The Times newspaper that the number of Gender Recognition Certificates (GRCs) issued there has tripled in the last five years.
The UK's Ministry of Justice issued 9,633 certificates (GRCs) between 2005-06 & March 2024 for a population of 68,265,209 (68.3 for mid 2023)
= 0.014% in c19 years
Ireland had a population of 5,149,139 in the 2022 Census and issued 1,544 GRCs from 2015 to end 2023
= 0.03% in 8 years
In the UK applicants have to be assessed by a medical and legal panel before being granted a GRC.
Here in Ireland with "self-id" anyone can apply and having a criminal record doesn't prevent someone from applying or receiving one either as the Department of Social Protection has confirmed.
